Two strangers stand in the early morning sun
drinking hot coffee from paper cups; no lids, no sugar, just dense black with swirls of oil slick.
Acknowledging one another,
they half smile a corner glance, mirroring each others existence
when one breaks out a pack of Marlboro reds and makes an offer to the other.
Taking a cigarette, he says:
“While families are buying Christmas trees, our neighbors are suffering on the streets. What do you make of these things?”
His new friend responds:
“Winter solstice nears and in the air there lies a lingering grey haze with a texture of satin dew. Don’t worry friend, when Spring appears, flowers break through the street’s cracks, producing many colors for others.”
Together, momentarily chuckling at the complexity of duality…
They fall into a stare.
The retinas of their eyes begin to expand;
dense, black, and circular with a face reflecting in the other.
They drop their coffee cups and break out into laughter.
Crooked noses, balding, lined, and peeking under the blinds;
a fucking lady bug flies by, but of course!
It is a sign!
A red winged creature surviving during these cold times.
It is beyond the limits of analytics that sparks creative Spirit.
Simultaneously they decide; there is no better time to go home, clean out their closets, and donate a blanket to those in need and impoverished.
